Basic Aerodynamics is the study of how air interacts with an aircraft in flight. It explains the scientific principles that allow airplanes to take off, climb, cruise, turn, and land safely. Understanding aerodynamics helps pilots make better decisions, plan performance, and maintain safe aircraft control.

Basic Aerodynamics explains the science behind flight—how wings create lift, how forces interact, and how aircraft remain stable and controllable. It forms the foundation for all advanced aviation topics, including performance, flight planning, aircraft systems, and pilot decision-making.

The Four Fundamental Forces of Flight

  • 1. Lift

    • The upward force that keeps an aircraft in the air.

    • Created when air flows over the wings.

    • The wing is shaped (airfoil) so air moves faster on top and slower below, creating lower pressure above and higher pressure below.

    • More speed = more lift.

  • 2. Weight (Gravity)

    • The downward force caused by gravity.

    • Opposes lift.

    • A pilot must generate enough lift to overcome weight during takeoff and climb.

What is the target audience?

  • 3. Thrust

    • The forward force produced by the engines or propeller.

    • Opposes drag.

    • More thrust = more speed and faster airflow over the wings.

  • 4. Drag

    • The resisting force caused by air friction and turbulence.

    • Opposes thrust.

    • Two types:

  • The angle between the wing’s chord line and the relative airflow.

  • Increasing AOA increases lift, up to a certain point.

  • When AOA becomes too high, airflow separates from the wing surface, causing a stall (loss of lift).
