Aircraft Systems refers to all the equipment and subsystems installed in an airplane that support safe, efficient, and reliable flight. These systems work together to power the aircraft, control it, maintain cabin comfort, ensure navigation, and protect the aircraft in emergencies. A solid understanding of these systems helps pilots operate the aircraft safely and respond properly to system failures.

Aircraft Systems form the backbone of safe and efficient flight operations. Each system—engine, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, avionics, and more—has a specific role that contributes to aircraft performance, comfort, and safety.

Understanding how these systems operate and interact helps aviation students, pilots, and engineers make sound decisions during normal operations and respond effectively during emergencies.

Main Features

  • Types of aircraft engines:

    • Piston/Reciprocating Engines – common in small training aircraft.

    • Turboprop Engines – turbine engine with a propeller.

    • Turbojet/Turbofan Engines – used in commercial jets.

  • Engine components:

    • Fuel system

    • Ignition system

    • Lubrication system

    • Cooling system

    • Exhaust system

Fuel System

  • Supplies fuel to the engine(s) safely and reliably.

    Main components:

    • Fuel tanks (usually in the wings)

    • Fuel pumps (engine-driven + electric backup)

    • Fuel lines and filters

    • Fuel selectors (Left/Right/Both/Off)

Key purposes:

  • Deliver clean fuel under proper pressure

  • Allow fuel balancing between tanks

  • Prevent fuel contamination and vapor lock

Electrical power uses:

  • Engine starting

  • Navigation equipment

  • Lighting (interior/exterior)

  • Communication systems

  • Backup power during engine failure
